The folks at Good Morning Maryland on ABC 2 in Baltimore were kind enough to have us on their show yesterday. With everything our partner pharmacies are doing with FLAVORx to help children across the country take their liquid Tamiflu, they wanted to share the story with their audience. It turned out to be a much broader discussion about what we do for children, adults and even pets!

Who We Are

Before we really start digging into the intriguing world of medication adherence, I thought it would be a good idea to let you know who FLAVORx is and why we’re worth paying attention to when it comes to this subject.

FLAVORx was founded in 1994 on the principle that all the benefits of modern medicine are moot if people can’t/won’t/don’t take the drugs. We started off in an independent pharmacy in Washington DC, flavoring medications for children that had severe difficulties swallowing them. The demand from parents was so high (they were driving to our pharmacy from 2 hours away just to get the medicine flavored) we decided to make a business out of it. Fast forward 15 years, we now have over 35,000 pharmacies on board with FLAVORx, from the largest pharmacy chains to the independent corner pharmacy. We estimate our flavoring systems have been used to flavor in the neighborhood of 40,000,000 prescriptions over the years. Our flavoring formulary includes instructions on flavoring thousands of medications. So we know a little something about helping people take their medicine. This year, we launched Pill Glide, a product designed to help children and adults swallow tablets and capsules. We live and breathe medication adherence.

While we believe they’re important pieces of the puzzle, we understand the issue of medication adherence is bigger than just improving drug palatability and making it easier for people to swallow tablets and capsules. That’s why we’re starting the ‘Adherence Matters’ blog. As a company, we want the adherence/compliance issue solved. It’s placing a tremendous burden on health care systems around the world. The more we can do to shine a light on this global problem, the better. Stay tuned.

Hello and welcome to the new FLAVORx Adherence Matters blog. My name is Chad and I’ll be one of the main contributors to this site. We’ll be updating Adherence Matters regularly with news and commentary related to medication adherence, an important topic not only in the States (where the ANNUAL health care burden of non-adherence is estimated at $300 billion!) , but around the world. It’s an issue that’s finally getting the serious attention it deserves and, with our 15 years of experience in the field, we hope to add our unique perspective to the conversation. If you’re at all interested in medication adherence and what can be done to improve it, then subscribe to this blog. Link to us as well. The more attention we can put on adherence, the better. Because it matters.
